Hurt

Really strong record that just misses the mark of perfection in a few spots. The highs here are genuinely incredible though, and even the weaker tracks are better than most artists' best work. Highly recommended.

Boys in the Better Land

Really impressive album that showcases an artist at a creative peak. The range of sounds and moods they explore here is remarkable, and what's more impressive is that it all feels cohesive rather than scattered. The transitions between tracks are so smooth you barely notice them. There are a handful of moments where the ambition slightly exceeds the execution — a lyric that doesn't quite land, a sonic idea that needed a bit more development — but these are minor blemishes on an otherwise excellent record. The standout tracks here are among the best songs released in the last decade.

I appreciate the artistic risk-taking even if the result is a bit of a mess. There are kernels of good ideas scattered throughout but nothing is developed enough to really land. Frustrating because you can hear the potential.

I went into this with an open mind and came out confused about its reputation. The songwriting is meandering, the production choices are baffling, and the whole thing feels about twice as long as it needs to be. There are maybe two tracks that justify their existence and the rest is filler. I don't begrudge anyone who loves this — art is subjective and all that — but I find the unanimous critical acclaim mystifying. This felt like homework, not music. I kept waiting for the moment where it all clicks and it just never came.

The first half of this album is some of the best music I've ever heard. The second half is merely great. That slight drop-off is the only thing keeping this from a perfect score. Still an essential listen.

Come Down

The first half is near-perfect. Second half is still great but slightly less focused.

Army of Me

Tried really hard to get into this and gave it way more chances than most albums. Some sections are legitimately interesting but they're sandwiched between long stretches of tedium. Not worth the effort for most listeners.

Army of Me

An absolute masterpiece from start to finish. Every track earns its place.

Rockin' in the Free World

A rich, layered album that reveals more with each listen.

Rockin' in the Free World

A once-in-a-generation artistic achievement.

Hard Times

A monumental achievement in every sense.

Between the Bars

The instrumentation is gorgeous throughout. Really well produced.

Between the Bars

Worth a listen but doesn't demand repeat plays.

Mykonos

Incredibly overrated. One of the most baffling critical darlings out there.

I keep going back and forth on this one. Some days I think it's underrated, other days I think the consensus is about right. The production is genuinely interesting — there are textures and sonic choices here that I haven't heard elsewhere. But the songwriting underneath all that ornamentation is sometimes pretty thin. It's one of those albums that's more fun to think about and discuss than it is to actually listen to, if that makes sense. The concept is great, the execution is uneven. I respect it more than I enjoy it, but I do respect it quite a bit.

Mykonos

A few incredible songs surrounded by more forgettable material.

Talking Heads

Not for me at all. I can see the craft but it does absolutely nothing for me.

Lost Ones

Some interesting ideas that don't always come together.

Dense and complex but never pretentious. Excellent stuff.

Lost Ones

Really strong album with only a couple of tracks that don't quite land.
