Dynamite

There's a really great EP buried inside this album. The problem is the surrounding material dilutes the impact. When this hits, it HITS — a couple of these tracks are among the best things they've ever done. But then you get a run of three mediocre songs in a row and the momentum completely dies. I appreciate the attempt at a longer, more ambitious project, but I think this artist works better in shorter formats. The ideas here are strong but they're stretched too thin. Still worth hearing for the highlights though.

Took a few listens to click but now I can't stop playing it.

Close to Me

Feels self-indulgent in places. Could have been much better with editing.

Close to Me

Really impressive album that showcases an artist at a creative peak. The range of sounds and moods they explore here is remarkable, and what's more impressive is that it all feels cohesive rather than scattered. The transitions between tracks are so smooth you barely notice them. There are a handful of moments where the ambition slightly exceeds the execution — a lyric that doesn't quite land, a sonic idea that needed a bit more development — but these are minor blemishes on an otherwise excellent record. The standout tracks here are among the best songs released in the last decade.

Whitehouse Road

A once-in-a-generation artistic achievement.

Whitehouse Road

Not their absolute best work but still head and shoulders above most albums.

Whitehouse Road

A mature, confident album that knows exactly what it wants to be. No wasted tracks, no unnecessary detours. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but it polishes it to a brilliant shine. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Svefn-g-englar

I appreciate the artistic risk-taking even if the result is a bit of a mess. There are kernels of good ideas scattered throughout but nothing is developed enough to really land. Frustrating because you can hear the potential.

Magnolia

Pushes the boundaries of the genre in interesting ways.

Magnolia

I've introduced maybe a dozen friends to this album and every single one of them has become a fan. That kind of universal appeal combined with genuine artistic depth is incredibly rare. This is the real deal.

Magnolia

Arguably the greatest album in its genre. Hard to argue otherwise.

Fine album from a good band. Nothing offensive, nothing transcendent. It sits comfortably in the middle of their discography and that's okay. Not everything needs to be a masterpiece to be worth your time.

Middle of the road for this artist. Not bad by any means but not essential.

The talent is obvious but the execution is inconsistent.

The Trooper

Pretentious and meandering. Style over substance.

The Trooper

The ideas are there but the execution falls flat too often.

The Trooper

A few incredible songs surrounded by more forgettable material.

Hard to Explain

I went into this with an open mind and came out confused about its reputation. The songwriting is meandering, the production choices are baffling, and the whole thing feels about twice as long as it needs to be. There are maybe two tracks that justify their existence and the rest is filler. I don't begrudge anyone who loves this — art is subjective and all that — but I find the unanimous critical acclaim mystifying. This felt like homework, not music. I kept waiting for the moment where it all clicks and it just never came.

HUMBLE.

Overrated in my opinion. There's some good stuff here but not enough.
